Boeing and Airbus met with U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and other Biden administration members to demand a delay in 5G.
Boeing and Airbus, the world’s largest commercial aircraft manufacturers, want the U.S. to delay its 5G service, which begins use next month. The companies’ CEOs, David Calhoun and Jeffery Knittel, personally submitted their requests to the Biden administration.

Boeing and Airbus executives sent a letter to U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg explaining the situation. They said the 5G service, which will be available on January 5th, could adversely affect the ability of aircraft to operate safely, so they asked for it to be delayed to a later date.
The problem is said to have occurred on devices known as radar altimeters, which commercial aircraft pilots need to land safely in low visibility conditions. A study on the subject says the resulting parasite can affect hundreds of thousands of flights each year, delaying flights or causing them to change direction.
CEOssay they are developing a new proposal to limit the power of 5G transmissions near airports and are urging the Biden administration to work with the Federal Communications Commission to adopt such a plan. They also note that the effects of allowing 5G to spread will be huge and come at a time when the industry is still struggling with theCOVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier this month, the Federal Aviation Administration announced a new rule banning pilots from using automatic landing and other specific flight systems at low altitudes, where 5G signals can interact with equipment that measures the plane’s distance to the ground.
The new rule, which affects more than 6,800aircraft and dozens of aircraft manufacturers in the U.S., is said to cause disruptions to some flight routes with low visibility conditions and even make flying unsafe.
