The leaders discussed the Ukraine-Russia crisis and briefed each other on their recent meetings with other world leaders, the British Prime Minister’s Office said in a written statement. “They agreed that there remains a very important opportunity for diplomacy and for Russia to step back from its threats to Ukraine,” the statement said, adding that “the leaders stressed that further intervention in Ukraine would result in a prolonged crisis for Russia and would cause great harm to both Russia and the world.”

“(The leaders) agreed that Western allies should remain united in the face of Russian threats, including the implementation of an important sanctions package in the event of increased Russian aggression. They also reiterated the need for European countries to reduce their dependence on Russian gas, a move that will hit the heart of Russia’s strategic interests more than others.” Johnson and Biden agreed to stay in close contact as the situation in the Ukraine-Russia crisis develops.
