Indonesia volcano reactivates, death toll rises to 22

The death toll from the eruption at Indonesia’s Mount Semeru has risen to 22.

Mount Semeruin East Java, Indonesia, erupted on Saturday. Mount Semeru, one of the highest mountains on the island, was reactivated today, spewing clouds of hot ash.

Indonesia’s Disaster Mitigation Agency said in a statement that 22 people have been killed and 27 are missing so far.

“Semeru is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. It will continue to be active before and after the explosion on December 4th.” After some people returned home to check on their belongings and animals, Liswando urged people to stay at a safe distance, saying, “People need to be more vigilant because the potential threat is still there.”

Rescuers in the Sumberwuluh area were found to be battling bad weather during the rescue. “The main obstacle is The Weather. I hope the weather will be nice in a way that facilitates our search and rescue efforts.”

For more than 1,700 people who were damaged, kitchens and health facilities were established. People are sharing photos of missing persons on social media to get any information about their whereabouts.
